Tom and Terri Smith, Unit 1783, recently moved to Huntington Woods from Delray Beach, Florida. They said they had decided they wanted to get away from the weather and leave crowded, expensive Florida. They decided beautiful Hickory was the place to live. To choose a new home, they spent time reading magazine articles, researching real estate websites, and searching out other information online. All of this led them to Huntington Woods. Tom said he leaves early early every morning to exercise at the gym and loves breathing the early morning fresh, cool air.
They are very happy with their choice and Tom, an avid birder and trail bike rider, hasn’t lost any time in getting out to explore nature in all of the local city and county parks.
Both Tom and Terri are dedicated nature photographers and actually met in 2010 in the Green Cay Nature Center and Wetlands in Florida. They met there while she was taking a macro of what she said was a magnificent caterpillar. They have been together ever since and had their wedding at Green Cay in 2013, surrounded by birding friends and family.
A native of Ohio, Tom left to join the Navy at age eighteen. Most of his ten year Naval career was based out of San Diego, California. Upon leaving the Navy, he made his home in Delray, where he was a deputy sheriff for twenty years until retirement.
Terri, a native of New York State, was born in the Bronx and moved to Syracuse when she was eleven years old. She moved to Los Angeles at age twenty-two to work in the movie industry. In 1994, following a devastating California earth-quake, she decided to make Florida her new home after visiting her parents there.
Before retiring, she worked on internal auditing in the Office of Inspector General at Florida Atlantic University. During her tenure there, they exposed large-scale fraud and embezzle-ment by a university employee.
Since their marriage, every annual vacation has included a cruise. There have been ten cruises so far. They consider their Alaska cruise to be the best one, next best cruises in-clude going to Panama then to Costa Rica.
Terri’s hobbies include music, she has played the guitar since she was seven years old, and outdoor photography.
Their interests together include a passion for jigsaw puzzles. They think they have done about 250 different puzzles and have repeated working some of those puzzles. They also enjoy play-ing scrabble and backgammon.
A welcome to our community for Tom and Terri and their two cats, Misty and Zeus.
